spending an insightful evening learning about the history of Charnwood’s Mayor-Ship since 1888!
The Mayor of Charnwood (who used to be a Scout himself), along with the Chief Executive and the
Civic Officer gave our Explorers the chance to look at their 126 year old robe (which is only washed
every ten years!), the silver Ceremonial Mace, and the 18 Karat gold Chain of Office. They were also
given the opportunity to ask any questions including why the chief executive wears a wig!
When we asked the Explorers how it felt to meet the Mayor of Charnwood, Thomas, 14 told us “it’s
interesting getting to meet someone who is like a member of the Royal family. We learned about a
lot about Charnwood because you’ve got it on your uniform but you never normally know what the
place is about properly.” Mathew Baker, 14 was given the opportunity to try on the Mace Barer
uniform: “It fitted really well! It was quite loose and light. When you’re walking with the Mace you
have to be careful not to hit it against anything because it’s an old.” When we asked him how it felt
to wear the uniform, he said “It felt like I was in power because the Mace Barer always has to protect
