That’s right we blasted off into space for our first District camp since covid. Over 500 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders from all over Charnwood travelled to Sherbooke Scout Campsite for an out of this world District camp.
Arriving on Friday evening, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers put their tents and hammocks up and excitedly set out their beds ready for the first night of camp. Once the tents where up it was time for the opening ceremony where DC Paul and the District team welcomed everyone to camp before moving on to the campfire circle for an evening of singing and dancing. After a brilliant campfire it was time for hot dogs, hot chocolate and bed.
As Saturday broke it was time to get ready for the day of activities. The Explorers went off site to take part in a day of mountain biking in Clumber park, going around its trails. The Scouts also went off site for a day of sky high fun at the Newark Air Museum, looking at and learning about the collection of planes and helicopters from the help of the museums volunteers. Whilst at the museum the Scouts gained their Air Activity badge stages 1 and 2.
Back at the campsite the Cubs had a full day of on site activities, laser clay, laser tag, glass engraving, archery, camp kitchen, climbing and brand new for this year slot cars just to name a few. All the Cubs went around all the activities in hour slots.
Whilst all this was going on four coaches full of Beavers arrived for their activity day full of activities which included cross bows, pedal cars, s’mores, crazy golf and of course bouncy castles! The Beavers where also visited by the one and only Charlie Charnwood who went and said hello to everyone during lunch. At the end of activity day the Beavers enjoyed their very own campfire with ADC Mr T who also presented some special awards. Two Chief Scout Bronze awards, the highest award a Beaver can achieve and a Commissioners Commendation Award, only the second ever presented in the District, to Evie from Rothley for helping to save her neighbour!
After the Beaver campfire it was time for the Beavers to head home and all the Scouts and Explorers to come back. That evening all the young people took part in a street fair where each group put on activities for everyone to enjoy and everyone came in fancy dress.
As dawn broke on Sunday morning it was time for a final morning of activities with two extra special activities, a meet the beats session for the Cubs who got to say hello and hold lizards, scorpions, spiders and a huge snake called Jeff and zorb football for the Scouts.
Finally it was time to close camp, but not before some Chief Scout Gold awards, Wood Bead presentations, a St Georges Day award, a Medal of Merit, several investitures and the camp awards where handed out.
Thank you to all the Leaders, parent helpers and other volunteers who came together to make the weekend possible.
