It’s that time of year again where we celebrate England’s patron saint St George. This year saw the return of action packed fun days for the Beavers and Cubs and a challenging hike for the Scouts and Explorers.

The weekend of celebrations kicked off on the Saturday with over 200 Beavers from across the district arriving at the Oaks campsite. The day was full of activities including St Georges themed crafts, cooking smores on fires, bouldering wall and of course bouncy castles!

But that’s not all the Beavers got up to, first thing in the morning they were visited by Charlie Charnwood, who set them a competition to see who could be the muddiest Beaver, which wasn’t hard with a really muddy jungle trail assault course.

The Beavers also had a special visitor, The Worshipful The Mayor of Charnwood Councillor Pauline Ransom. She came to see all the fun we were having and meet some very excited Beavers.

The day ended with a camp fire, where songs were sang and Charlie Charnwoood returned to present awards including Chief Scout Bronze awards, the highest award a Beaver can achieve.

Whilst all this was going on the Scouts and Explorers were arriving at Bradgate Park to start their hike. They walked across the the countryside to the Oaks campsite where they were going to sleep out under the stars in cardboard box shelters. We say going to, they built the shelters and got settled down and then the rain came and washed the shelters away. But don’t worry, we pitched some tents, opened up a hut and made a pot of hot chocolate, and everyone was happy and dry.

On Sunday the slightly soggy Scouts and Explorers waved goodbye and went home, just as well as over 100 Cubs descended for their day of activities.

The Cubs also had a full day of activities including cross bows, chocolate orange cooking and two new activities fencing and the tilt yard. The tilt yard was a jousting set up with Cubs given huge lances and space hoppers where they bounced over to the shields and hit them with the lance to make them spin.

At the end of the day the Cubs also had a campfire where awards were given out and campfire songs sung. During the weekend each section joined with fellow Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders across England in renewing their promise.
